MARK KAUZLARICH
EDITOR & PHOTOGRAPHER
HODINKEE
“I’ve accumulated so many books in the past few years, and many have been packed away as I prepare to move apartments. One that stayed easily reachable is Vallée de Joux by Dan Holdsworth, which was commissioned by Audemars Piguet. The story of the valley is so inextricably tied to the landscape but I don’t think anyone else was clever enough to understand that the landscape itself was a character that deserved its own study. As for traditional watch books, Patek Philippe Steel Watches by John Goldberg and White Cartier hold a special place for me.”
Mark Kauzlarich is an accomplished photographer and National Geographic Explorer based in New York. He holds a Bachelor’s degree in Political Science and Middle Eastern Studies from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, where he also pursued Arabic language studies. Following this, he earned a Master’s in Photojournalism from the University of Missouri, a pivotal step that launched his career in visual storytelling. Mark has worked across various editorial and commercial clients, including The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal and TIME, capturing moments in over 35 states and multiple countries.
Mark was named a National Geographic Explorer in 2018 and and has been awarded two grants from the National Geographic Society. He was also a 2018 nominee for Visa Pour L’Image’s Remi Ochlik Award, Burn Magazine Emerging Photographer Fund 2018 Shortlist, and a winner of 2018’s Magenta Foundation Flash Forward. His storytelling niche is characterised by a pursuit of rugged beauty and a focus on underrepresented communities. His work with National Geographic reflects this ethos, focusing on rural America and often overlooked narratives, exploring healthcare issues, economic struggle, and resilience.
Currently, Mark serves as an Editor and Staff Photographer at Hodinkee, where he continues his storytelling journey by exploring the world of watches, combining his passion for photography with his keen editorial eye.
